Interview - MANGO de COCO: A hair salon that is as exotic and colourful as a cocktail

The sympathetic young lady Markéta Matušková is the owner of a hairdressing salon with the original name MANGO de COCO. She loves her work, which is proven by hundreds of satisfied clients and beautiful hairstyles. We talked about how the name of the salon came about, why she's not afraid of colour and how Reservio helps her manage the business.
Your salon has a beautiful and interesting name. How did it originate?
The salon is located in the city's conservation area. When I came up with the original name, the conservation authority rejected it. Then I was sitting in the bar, wondering what the name of the place would be. Time was flying and I needed to come up with something fast. When my eye fell on the mixed drink on the drinks menu, it was obvious. MANGO de COCO - a delicious refreshing drink with a coconut flavour. Atypical, exotic and full of colour, just like our salon.
Do you follow trends in hairstyles and fashion?
Sure, we regularly attend Goldwell training sessions to learn about the latest in colour mixing and cutting. I follow the trends, especially in the US. We want our customers to get a wide range of inspiration.
We have clients who come to the salon and have no idea what to do with their hair and what hairstyle to choose. They say, "Just do something with it." Others have a picture of their hairstyle on their phone and expect you to make it look like that. It's up to you to decide how you want to handle it. Then we have loyal clients who come back to us because we already know each other and know exactly what suits them, what quality of hair they have and we can meet their ideas and requirements.
We are also visited by men who want to look neat and stylish. Often they come as an escort to their future wife for a wedding hairstyle trial and then get their hair styled for their wedding day.
It's so nice to see our clients showing off their new hairstyle on Instagram. It's also perfect when a new customer comes in and wants the same colour and hairstyle she saw on her friend's Instagram. It makes us happy to set trends and influence the mindset of Czech women.
What advice would you give to Czech women?
Let them not succumb to conservatism and boredom. We have a wide clientele ranging from children, ladies, men to elderly women. We teach our clients not to be afraid of change, not to be afraid to wear a more distinctive cut and to have longer hair. Older ladies often think that at their age they have to have a short simple hairstyle, which then looks stereotypical and boring. A few ladies have literally come to their senses with a new haircut and hairstyle. Even hair with grey hairs is beautiful if the hairstyle is chosen to suit the woman's face and personality.
You have a successful salon. Do you feel like a successful businesswoman?
When I was a kid, I never dreamed of being a hairdresser. I wanted to be an economist and live abroad. Well, I ended up being an economist. Nowadays, being an entrepreneur means understanding many areas, dealing with various permits, keeping the books, etc. But most of all, making sure there's enough work for my hairdressers.
Luckily, Reservio helps me with that. Since we've been using the online booking system, clients book themselves in and we have no problem filling salon appointments. Plus, Reservio has freed us from having to answer the phone at work.
You participate in competitions, fashion shows and wedding fairs. You are the main partner of the Girl of the Czech Republic competition. Do you have any unfulfilled dreams?
Yes, of course I do. Our salon is very active. We're not just some generic hair salon that cuts and colors from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. We love life and creativity. We regularly participate in hair competitions, go to fashion shows to get our hair done, and work with bridal salons and fashion boutiques.
We constantly try to follow new trends and bring them to Czech women. In addition, every year we invent our own collections of hairstyles of our salon, which then make us advertised in the world's fashion magazines.
Our hairstyles, photographed by photographer Harry Marwell, have appeared in Vogue, which I consider an amazing success. I'm just living the color dream.
But you still have to have plans to move forward. I want to have my salon abroad. A MANGO de COCO in America. We'll see, maybe one day it will come true.
